Navigating Heavy Power Sanction (HT vs LT) for Manufacturing Plants in Rajasthan
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Technical walkthrough of JVVNL industrial power load applications, 11 KV vs 33 KV High Tension feeders, transformer yard setback regulations, and earth pit testing for manufacturing plants.

Industrial Power Infrastructure in Bhiwadi–Khushkhera

Uninterrupted power supply and dedicated feeder connectivity are critical for automotive parts manufacturing, steel extrusion, precision CNC machining, and cold storage units. In Rajasthan’s Alwar and NCR industrial belts, power distribution is managed by Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (JVVNL).

1. LT (Low Tension) vs. HT (High Tension) Thresholds

Selecting the correct sanction category directly determines your capital expenditure on transformers, metering cubicles, and ongoing tariff structure:

  • Low Tension (LT) Industrial Supply:
  • - Applicable for connected loads up to 150 HP (approximately 112 KVA) supplied at 415 Volts, 3-phase, 50 Hz.
    - Suitable for light assembly, warehouse packaging, tool rooms, and small plastic moulding units.
    - JVVNL supplies power directly from the roadside distribution transformer with no on-site outdoor transformer yard required.

  • High Tension (HT) Industrial Supply — 11 KV:
  • - Mandated for loads between 150 HP and 1,500 KVA.
    - Requires dedicated customer-owned outdoor or indoor step-down substation (11 KV / 415 V).
    - Includes a dedicated 11 KV Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB), CT/PT metering kiosk, and lightning arresters.
    - Substantially lower per-unit energy tariff compared to LT, making it economical for 24/7 continuous process industries.

  • Extra High Tension (EHT) Industrial Supply — 33 KV / 132 KV:
  • - For massive manufacturing plants with demand exceeding 1,500 KVA to 10,000 KVA (e.g., steel rolling mills, induction furnace casting, and large chemical complexes).
    - Power is drawn through a dedicated express feeder drawn straight from the nearest 220 KV or 132 KV Grid Substation (GSS).

    2. Mandatory Transformer Yard Safety Clearances (CEA Regulations)

When acquiring an existing factory or building a new PEB shed:

    1. Clearance from Main Shed: The outdoor transformer plinth must maintain a minimum clear distance of 3.0 meters from the main building wall.
    2. Oil Soak Pit: Transformers with oil capacity exceeding 2,000 liters must have an underground oil drainage soak pit packed with 40mm river gravel to absorb oil during a breach.
    3. Dedicated Earth Pits: CEA guidelines mandate a minimum of 4 to 6 separate chemical earth pits (2 for transformer neutral, 2 for body equipment grounding, and 2 for lightning surge protection) maintaining earth resistance below 1.0 Ohm.
    4. Fencing and Gates: A 2.4-meter high chain-link boundary with outward-opening padlocked gates and statutory Danger Plates (11,000 Volts).

At JP Associate, we review transformer load test reports, JVVNL security deposit records, and grid feeder spare capacity before advising industrial clients on acquisitions.
